The fire broke out in the eight metre by 150m domed shed at the vineyard property on The Escort Way west of Orange around 5am yesterday morning.

The RFS says fortunately the chickens which had earlier been housed in the shed had been removed when the fire started.

"They had already been removed for processing and the shed was in the process of being cleaned out when the fire started," the spokesman said.

Five RFS brigades from surrounding areas responded to the call, however two were called off en-route to the fire.

The units from Cudal, Gregra, and Manildra remained on site to bring the fire under control.

The RFS spokesman said an initial examination of the area indicated damage might be in the vicinity of $20,000 to $30,000.

"But we have since revised that figure and we are looking at damage which could be up to $50,000," the spokesman said.

The RFS is investigating the cause of the fire.
