The Effects of Weather on Bush fires

Temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric stability and rainfall are significant factors which will influence the way fires behave. They have a direct impact on the fire's ability to spread and consequently play a crucial role in defining the ease or otherwise of the fire suppression task.  

Fires in Pine Forests 

Basic fire science holds true in that fuel type, arrangement and quantity together with topography, fuel moisture content (FMC) and weather all play significant roles in pine forest fires. Pine forests in NSW are mostly in plantations. Even aged forests present different problems for fire fighters and land managers through the various stages of the forest's development.

This publication is designed to place in context the events of December 1993 and January 1994 and to shed some light on the interaction between communities and their environments. Many communities were faced with a fire threat the like of which had not been experienced for at least a decade, with many people having never experienced such a fire storm before.  

The Australian Experience 

Fire on Earth in the form of volcanic activity pre-existed vegetation. It has most likely affected the environment since the first vegetation appeared. Lightning, volcanic eruptions and maybe even sparks from rock falls would have served as ignition sources from the earliest times.
