State of Emergency declared (NSW)

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell today declared a state of emergency for NSW ahead of the forecast deteriorating weather conditions in bush fire zones. Earlier today, Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons wrote to the Premier requesting he declare a state of emergency under section 33 of the State Emergency and Rescue Management Act. Following consultation with the Minister for Police and Emergency Services and a meeting of the State Emergency Management Committee, the Premier signed the order this afternoon and appointed the RFS Commissioner responsible for controlling and co-ordinating the declaration.

Assistance for bush fire affected communities

NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell said NSW Government agencies are providing a coordinated response to the current bush fire emergency to provide support to those in need. Mr O’Farrell also offered condolences to the family of a 63-year-old man who has been confirmed as suffering a fatal heart attack while defending his home against bushfires at Lake Munmorah yesterday. "We were hoping for a miracle but sadly it has now been confirmed there has been a fatality - I send my condolences to the man’s family and friends at this difficult time," Mr O’Farrell said.

NSW Government Acts to Protect Volunteer Firefighters

 NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell and Minister for Emergency Services Michael Gallacher today announced the NSW Government has put in place legal protections to ensure emergency services volunteers involved in current bush fire fighting operations are not penalised by their employer for giving up their time.

AIR-CRANE ARRIVES FOR NSW FIRE SEASON
