Wyee Brigade's Womens Firefighting Team, 1969
In early 1967 while the Wyee Brigade‘s firefighters were away working at either Munmorah or Vales Point Power Stations, eight female firefighters started to go to the fires in their civilian clothing, as uniforms were not available to women. The callout became more formalised once the men realised the women were serious about asisting, resulting in the Postmistress calling the women out first. Once the men arrived they worked alongside each other until the fire settled down, then the women would return to prepare meals or collect their young children from their neighbours.
The tanker shown is an International AR160 and was built up by the members. The Station, which was replaced in 1990, was also built by the members and had tank water, one shower “out the back” but had no toilet or other facilities.
The orginal all women team included Gwen Deaves (Captain), Betty White (Deputy Captain and Driver), Gladys Bateup, Rita Farmer, Daphne Deaves, Nancy Baker, Ivy Hawkins, Pat Coulthart.
