YOUNG Rural Fire Service cadets are now heavily in training for the fourth biennial Australian Fire Cadet Championships later this year.

The cadets, according to acting South West Slopes zone manager David Nicholson, mostly hail from Young.

The championships will bring together 27 teams of six young firefighters from across the country for three days of friendly competition and fun.

The NSW Rural Fire Service Association (RFSA) and the NSW Rural Fire Service are co-hosting the event at Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre from Monday, September 30 to Thursday, October 3.

Over the three days all cadet teams will compete in eight events being Portable Pump Relay; Two Lines, Two Lengths; Hose and Hydrant Drill; Light Tanker and Handtool; Station Response & Knapsack Drill; Tanker and Ladder; Two Tanker; and Team Challenge.

RFS Acting president, Alan Holley said it's extremely important the next generation of firefighters are encouraged to develop their skills.

"These championships are one way for cadet crews to hone those skills," he said.

As well as traditional fire championship events, teams will also participate in training, team-building and leadership activities.

"This will develop a Rural Fire Service of the future," Mr Holley said.

He said there had been great interest from NSW, two Western Australian teams had nominated, as had South Australia and Victorian teams.

"It shows the level of commitment in rural fire fighting for generations to come," Mr Holley said.

The championships are open to young people aged 12-16 from an agency-approved cadet or junior member program.
