A Melbourne Cup tip - prepare your horse for bush fire

Summary

Think a bush fire won't happen to you? Don't gamble on it.

This Melbourne Cup day, the NSW RFS is encouraging horse owners to think about their four-legged friends when making their bush fire survival plan.

Last minute decisions during a fire can lead to horses being let loose on the road, putting the horse and firefighters in danger.

You can give everyone, including your horse, the best chance of survival by having a bush fire survival plan. Think about how you would move your horses, and where you would take them.

In many cases, it may actually be safer to leave them in a safer location on your property, such as a cleared area that's well away from bush or tall grass.

It's not a form guide - but the NSW RFS has produced a handy guide that can help horseowners prepare for bush fire.
