Fire Fighting Heroes

Summary

The NSW Rural Fire Service has acknowledged the service of three Blue Mountains members who were tragically killed in the 1968 Springwood bush fires.

A very moving, emotional and fitting ceremony in the Blue Mountains this morning with family friends and colleagues to unveil a plaque and commemorate the 50th ...Anniversary of the tragic deaths of 3 local NSW Rural Fire Service fire fighters.

On the 29th October 1968, Captain Tom Chalmers (Faulconbridge Brigade) and Fire Fighters Peter Hawkins and Greg Eley (Warrimoo Brigade), perished when overrun by fire on the Shaw’s Ridge Fire Trail off the end of White Cross Road, Winmalee.

Understandably, the loss is still very raw for families and loved ones, as well as fellow crew that survived that terrible day.

Congratulations and thank you to Captains Paul Spinks and Dave McNeill and Deputy Group Captain Jamie Carter, on delivering some very stirring and heartfelt addresses, paying tribute to these 3 men who paid the ultimate price and for thanking and honouring their families with such a special monument.

May we never forget the sacrifice of all those that have paid the ultimate price in serving and protecting their community.
