Major Hazard Reduction Burn North East of Orange Saturday 9/4/2016

Summary

A major hazard reduction burn is planned for an area to the North East of Orange city on Saturday 9th April 2016.

The burn will be undertaken by the NSW Rural Fire Service Canobolas Zone volunteers at the South
Mullion Crown Land on the Lower Lewis Ponds Road.

Superintendent David Hoadley, manager of the Canobolas Zone of the NSW Rural Fire Service says this is
the first major local burn of the season with residents in the area expected to see smoke rising from around
11am on Saturday.

“We aim to burn 140 hectares of vegetation along the Lower Lewis Ponds Road and this will provide
valuable protection to the Clifton Grove and Strathnook Lane areas east of Orange city,” Mr Hoadley said.

“The RFS will be working together with the Department of Primary Industries - Lands and the Aboriginal
Lands Council who will be conducting a traditional burn on 8 hectares of Crown land.

“The area we aim to undertake the hazard reduction on is a Strategic Fire Advantage Zone which is
important work to protect our local communities.

There will be eight brigades and approximately 40 volunteers working over the weekend to make sure
property is protected while the burn is undertaken. The burn will take place subject to favourable weather
conditions.

“A helicopter will be used to drop aerial incendiaries to implement the burn which will reduce the significant
fuel loads that are present in this locality,” Mr Hoadley said.

“Residents in Orange and the surrounds can expect smoke to impact at times over the weekend depending
on the winds conditions.

“Residents should not be concerned as this activity is controlled and undertaken in a safe manner.

“People suffering from health and breathing disorders should take precautions and remain inside if
necessary.

“Department of Primary Industries - Lands is supportive of this weekend’s activity and is delighted to work
with the local aboriginal community in undertaking a traditional burn.

“The staff and volunteers in the Canobolas Zone have set aside the month of April to conduct a large
number of hazard reduction burns whilst the weather conditions remain favourable.”
