EMERGENCY crews rushed to the Orange Airport after a plane crashed at about 3.45pm on Wednesday.

However, the two people inside the plane managed to escape injury.

The single engine Piper aircraft was landing in Orange after a flight from Bankstown.

A student pilot was on board along with an instructor.

The plane landed heavily on the main runway.

The plane's landing gear was buckled by the impact and the plane skidded around 50 metres off to the side of the runway.

Orange City Council spokesman Allan Reeder said because the aircraft finished up outside the runway's line of gables, which defines the landing area, the airport could continue to operate as normal and no commercial flights were delayed.

Investigations into the cause of the incident are continuing.
