Deputy Captain Ray Hehir, of the Murrumbateman Rural Fire Brigade, received the Commissioner's Commendation for Service in the recent St Florian's Day ceremony in Sydney.

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons paid tribute to deputy captain Hehir, applauding his efforts in building the Murrumbateman fire station extension.

"The facility is now at a stage where it can house all of the brigade's trucks and equipment," he said.

Deputy Captain Hehir was quick to downplay the accolade.

"I'm just glad there weren't fire fighters there being awarded for risking their lives in a burning building or something, I would have looked a little silly up there," he said.
