Up hill, down hill; the RFS in training

Summary

The Young Witness

Local Rural Fire Service (RFS) members recently tested their driving skills against some tough terrain when they took their tankers four wheel driving.

Seven students from Young and Cootamundra brigades stood before an old gravel pit on a Cootamundra property for a two-day rural fire driving course.

They were tested for their on-road response driving and off-road four wheel driving in front of five RFS instructors.

Drivers faced obstacles such as driving through creek crossings, steep inclines and declines and challenging terrain.

They were also tested on their maintenance skills on the trucks.

And how did they find it?

"It was an eye opener," Robert Schutz from the Young brigade said.

For others it was nothing they weren't used to.
