Summary

The fire, which started at Watershed Stud just out of Young on Moppity Road soon after lunchtime on Friday, travelled 12 kilometres in 20 minutes and came within just five kilometres of the Boorowa township.

An interview with Tim Carroll, RFS public liaison officer based at Harden at 4.30pm on 18-1-2013:

Are residents being evacuated in the Boorowa shire or town?

An evacuation warning was sent to residents in and around Boorowa. An evacuation centre has been set up at the Harden Country Club in East St. There has been a wind change and the fire is now not directly threatening Boorowa but we are asking residents to stay alert and listen to local radio and watch the local websites and the RFS website.

How are the RFS tackling the fire?

There's currently 180 firefighters out in the field being supported by helicopters and 60 tankers. The air crane is travelling from Wagga to assist with firefighting efforts. Firefighters are also coming to Boorowa shire from outside the district to assist – from Yass.

How many hectares of land has it burnt?

It has burnt 1500 hectares.

Where in the shire is the fire now?

The fire is burning through farmland west of Boorowa and it's approximately 7kms west of Boorowa, burning north of Ballyryan Rd and south of Murringo Gap Rd.

Is it still expected to hit Boorowa?

There has been a wind shift but we are still asking residents in Boorowa to stay alert.

The wind is now northeasterly.

Has anyone lost a property?

There are no reports of property loss or injury or fatality.

Is it too late to leave Boorowa?

People in Boorowa can still leave the area if they need to. We are asking people to watch conditions. If they see smoke or flames close to roads we ask them to stay away from them.
