Village Fire Fighter Training Weekend

Summary

Residents of Young and surrounding towns and villages can now rest a little easier, as a group of around 25 Rural Fire Service members successfully completed the Village Fire Fighter Course, held last weekend at Young RFS Depot on Rockdale Road.

An intensive night of theory and 2 days of practical scenarios, including gas bottles alight, vehicles on fire, a simulated flammable liquid spill and the ever present danger of a room billowing smoke. Equally difficult, was the reality of facing a potential life threatening scene as crews arrive and are hampered by distraught friends of a victim.

Four crews needed to work individually and designate independent roles within the group to bring all of these situations under control, as quickly and safely as possible, under the watchful eyes of the instructors. There was a focused look of determination present on all faces, as shouts of, "Water on!", "More Pressure", "Come on", "Go, go, go!" could be heard. At times, the firefighters could hardly be seen or see what they were doing, owing to enveloping smoke or great walls of water advancing on flames coming from everyday items.

To watch these groups, made up of various ages and brigades, working to such a high level as a team in such a short period of time, really says something about the quality of volunteers in our local area. There were many others involved in putting on this weekend, including catering, safety support and training officers.

You can all see the excellent skills being demonstrated here by your volunteers. Who knows, one day it may be you, family or friends who need the assistance of the Rural Fire Service, so do something for yourself and your community and think about joining this important volunteer organisation. You could be that extra person in the truck, who helps make a difference to all of our lives.aP'
