Camden Haven High School cadet firefighters celebrate graduation

Summary

Twenty-one students from Camden Haven High School were congratulated today by NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Executive Director Bronwyn Jones PSM and Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams MP for their successful completion of the NSW RFS Secondary School Cadet Program.

Ms Jones said the program is an ideal way to introduce young people to the important role volunteer firefighters play within communities.

"The cadets took part in a five-day course this week that has given them skills which will last a lifetime,” Ms Jones said.

“As well as examining fire behaviour, the students have been taught essential fire safety techniques and gained an appreciation of the work our emergency services do every day across this state.

"The cadet program also offers students the opportunity to build their confidence and experience firsthand the commitment and camaraderie that comes with volunteering and team work.”

Mrs Williams thanked Camden Haven High School Principal Margaret Hutchinson and her staff for helping to make the program such a success.

“It’s great to see genuine enthusiasm for this important community based program and I hope it will continue as part of the curriculum in future years,” Mrs Williams said.

Ms Jones also paid tribute to the NSW RFS volunteers and staff from the Mid Coast District who facilitated the course.

"NSW RFS members thoroughly enjoy working closely with schools and communities to ensure that everyone is as well prepared as possible for the very real threat of fire. Firefighters cannot do it alone,” Ms Jones said.

“The Service is proud to pass on the ideals of community service, dedication and teamwork to the next generation.”
