Tweed volunteers were joined by NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons at an awards ceremony held in recognition of their service.

Commissioner Fitzsimmons said it was fantastic to see 22 members awarded for their dedication and hard work.

“All of these members understand the value of community spirit and the importance of looking out for your neighbours. Without them, people living in the vast tracts of land they protect from fire would not be as safe as they are today.

“Worthy of particular mention is one person who has dedicated 42 years of his life to serving the community both as a staff member and a volunteer; an amazing achievement.

“Tom Maye joined the RFS in 1950 and has since held positions as Captain, Group Captain and as a staff member as Deputy Fire Control Officer.

“He remains an active member of Cudgen brigade sharing a wealth of knowledge and experience with his fellow members across the district.

“I am proud of all the members in the area for their efforts in working with the community all year round.

“Fighting fires and protecting the community is a team effort – people need to protect their homes, make a bushfire survival plan and work with fire fighters by taking their advice in the event of a bush fire.

“These members work hard to educate the community on how to prepare and read the signs so they will know if a challenging fire day is approaching.

“Their skills, dedication and loyalty are to be admired. “It is very rare and special to have a service of such dedicated professionals who often give up their own livelihoods to help others in times of emergency. We appreciate and thank them for that sacrifice,” said Commissioner Fitzsimmons.
