South Western NSW to benefit from new fire truck

Summary

A new state of the art fire truck was delivered to a brigade in the Wentworth area this weekend, while 160 longstanding NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) volunteers were awarded with Long Service Medals.

NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner Lane said keys to the brand new fire truck worth around $300,000 were delivered to the beaming Captain of the Gol Gol Brigade.

"The NSW RFS are committed to upgrading fire trucks when required as well as the facilities and equipment that our volunteers need to get their jobs done," said Assistant Commissioner Lane.

Volunteers in the South West of NSW were also praised for their hard work and commitment by Assistant Commissioner Dominic Lane when he awarded several members with medals at ceremonies in Balranald and Dareton.

"The ladies and gentlemen receiving awards for their commitment today set an inspirational example for the hundreds of members belonging to 27 brigades in this part of the State.

"Between them the volunteers receiving Long Service Medals this weekend have amassed an impressive 3,900 years of service to both their brigade and local community.

"Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and walks of life, but together they have a resolute determination to help others in times of emergency.

"John Freeman, who is being recognised for 63 years service to the Karpa Kora Brigade, is a great example of what makes the NSW RFS so special.

"People like Mr Freeman have shown courage and sacrifice in serving his community for so many years and these are common traits amongst all NSW RFS volunteers.

"Another member being awarded today, Ray Scott, first joined the Clare Brigade in a remote part of the Balranald Shire in 1965.

"Due to the vast terrain Mr Scott has stepped up to act in the position of Captain many times during the past 46 years and no doubt will continue to do so during the forthcoming bush fire season," said Assistant Commissioner Lane.

Volunteers also gathered together in two meetings in the Balranald and Wentworth districts this weekend to discuss topics relevant to local brigades with Assistant Commissioner Lane including facilities, preparations for the bush fire season, hazard reduction burns and enhancement to radios.
