Four fallen volunteers honoured at memorial

More than 100 emergency services volunteers who have lost their lives protecting NSW communities have been remembered during the annual Emergency Services Volunteer Memorial service.
Minister for Emergency Services and Resilience Steph Cooke said the service will pay tribute to the four volunteers being added to the memorial list on the Emergency Services Volunteer Memorial.
“Today we are remembering the sacrifices of Rural Fire Service volunteers Joanne Gaffey, Stanley Kowalski, Cletus Moran and Steve Thompson,” Ms Cooke said.
“Those whose names are being added today, as well as the 106 other volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, State Emergency Service, Volunteer Rescue Association and Marine Rescue who are already listed on the memorial, are remembered for their selflessness and commitment to protecting communities across our State.
“The recent flooding is a reminder of the inherent danger faced by our emergency services personnel on a daily basis. Our volunteers go above and beyond to help others in floods, storms, fires, road crashes and other emergencies.
“We will continue to honour that sacrifice and ensure the volunteers who have lost their lives in service to the community are never forgotten.”
The memorial, located at Mrs Macquarie’s Point in the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, was established in 2001 to honour all NSW emergency services volunteers.
Today’s service is being held at the Rural Fire Service Headquarters at Sydney Olympic Park due to the wet weather.
