Preparation the key to fire safety this fire season

Minister for Emergency Services Troy Grant said the fires over recent weeks should spur residents into action to prepare for the fire season and create or update bush fire survival plans.

“Our volunteer firefighters have responded to more than 2,500 fires this month. That is an average of 86 fires each day in September,” Mr Grant said.

“They don’t need any extra work. There will be warm and dry conditions across the State this weekend, and it is critical that members of the public listen to the expert advice of our firefighting agencies.”

NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons advised everyone, especially people travelling this long weekend, to familiarise themselves with the bush fire risk they may face over the coming days.

“You need to know the fire danger for the area you live in, or the area you may be visiting,” Commissioner Fitzsimmons said.

“High to Very High fire danger is forecast across most of State this long weekend and with the current dry and warm conditions, fires can start and spread rapidly.

“Preparation is the key. Know what you will do in the event of a fire, have a plan, and stay informed.”
Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said anyone planning a barbeque over the long weekend should check if a Total Fire Ban has been declared before lighting up.

“The only Cowboys we want to hear about this weekend are the ones at the footy Grand Final. The long weekend is a great occasion to fire up the BBQ, but it is important to do so safely,” Commissioner Baxter said.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re planning to cook in the backyard, at a picnic ground, or at a camp site. You need to put fire safety above all else.

“Adhere to the rules and most importantly never leave fires unattended.”
