State Media Officer

Role Description

Scope

The State Media Officer is responsible for assisting with the dissemination of information on NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) operations released to the public through the media.

Fundamental Protocols underpin the actions of all RFS members and must be adhered to at all times. They outline the Principles of being an RFS member and provide guidance on conduct to support the safety and wellbeing of members.

Key Accountabilities

  • Liaises with the State Media Supervisor to obtain information and maintain an overview of RFS incidents.
  • Provides statements and information to the media, ensuring alerts and warnings are disseminated and the work of the RFS and its members is promoted.
  • Ensures talking points are up-to-date and circulated to appropriate spokespersons as
    required.
  • Monitors comment to the media from Incident Management Teams (IMTs) and provides them with advice as required.
  • Monitors the media for issues arising from broadcasts and publications that affect the RFS and its members.
  • Forms a relationship and liaises with media present at the State Operations Centre (OpsCen).

Special Considerations

  • The State Media Officer reports to the State Media Supervisor and is activated by the State Public Information Coordinator (SPIC).
  • At all times the State Media Officer shall maintain a log and ensure the timely inclusion of information into ICON.
