Role Description
Scope
The State Public Information Coordinator (SPIC) leads and coordinates the activities of the State Public Information Unit (SPIU) and ensures information flow through the SPIU and with the Major Incident Coordinators (MIC), State Intelligence Coordinator (SIC), State Operations Controller (SOC)/Deputy State Operation Controller (DSOC), State Duty Operations Officer (SDOO), and other Agency Liaison Officers..
Fundamental Protocols underpin the actions of all RFS members and must be adhered to at all times. They outline the Principles of being an RFS member and provide guidance on conduct to support the safety and wellbeing of members.
Key Accountabilities
- Manages the flow of information through the SPIU and to the public through the media,
social media, Hazards Near Me, and the RFS website. - Supports the Bush Fire Information Line Coordinator (BFILC) to ensure information provided through the Bush Fire Information Line (BFIL) is accurate and consistent with information published on other official RFS sites/platforms.
- Ensures incident intelligence received through the BFILC and members of the media is shared in a timely manner with the appropriate member, i.e. SOC/DSOC, MIC, SIC.
- Ensures the flow of information occurs effectively through the SPIU, including information supplied from MIC, the State Public Information Officer (SPIO), the SIC, the SOC/DSOC and other members of the State Operations Centre (OpsCen).
- Maintains a detailed current picture of statewide incident activity.
- Maintains knowledge of current and forecast weather conditions.
- Attends all OpsCen briefings.
- Manages the welfare, staffing, outputs and performance of the SPIU.
- Assists with the construction and dissemination of warnings as part of the State Operations Emergency Warning Conference Call.
- Once a warning is issued, ensures the SPIU team is briefed and actions dissemination through required channels.
- Liaises with the Minister’s Office to ensure they are appropriately briefed and supported.
Special Considerations
- The SPIC manages the SPIO, State Media Supervisor, State Online Content Supervisor, and BFILC who all report to this position.
- At all times the SPIC shall maintain a log and ensure the timely inclusion of information into ICON.
