External Training
The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) offers Bush Fire Awareness (BFA) training through a free online learning course. In some locations, face-to-face training delivery may be available via local RFS District offices (Fire Control Centres) across NSW.
All RFS trainers are fully accredited and bring extensive practical experience and subject matter experience.
Bush Fire Awareness (BFA)
The Bush Fire Awareness training course is mandatory for non-firefighting personnel who require access to an active fire ground in NSW as part of their work. The course provides an overview of wildfire behaviour, safety principles, and working safely in fire-affected environments.
It is strongly recommended that participants also complete the Hazardous Tree Awareness online module in conjunction with BFA.
Both courses must be refreshed every three (3) years.
Important information for external learners
- The RFS does not retain training records for external learners. It is up to you to ensure you have a record of your completion.
- The course material is specific to NSW. Training requirements for other states and territories should be confirmed with the relevant emergency services organisation.
