Joining our Mitigation crews is a great way of helping to keep our community safe, while enjoying a career in the NSW RFS.
Our Mitigation Crews perform a number of roles, such as helping to prepare areas for hazard reduction by volunteer brigades, meaning our community is safer from bush fires.
They also help some of the most at-risk members of our community through the Assist Infirm, Disabled and Elderly Residents (AIDER) program.
If you enjoy working outdoors, and want to help the community, a role in our Mitigation Crews could be for you.
We recruit annually for our Mitigation crews. If you’re interested, register your details and we will let you know when to apply.
If you are fit, enjoy physically demanding work, traveling and have firefighting qualifications, you are encouraged to apply when applications open.
The required qualifications will be provided when roles are advertised, and by registering for emails below.
Recruitment for our Mitigation crews happens every year, and normally opens around February.
As part of the recruitment process we need candidates to pass a National Criminal History Record Check, meet specific requirements of a medical assessment, and pass the Arduous Pack test.

Applications will be advertised on I Work for NSW.
This involves a 4.83km walk while carrying a 20.4kg vest, in less than 45 minutes. If you weigh under 68 kilograms, you can use a lighter vest of 15.4kg. Pack tests will be conducted at a number of different locations. We encourage you to start training eight weeks in advance. Sign up to the Mitigation email for tips on training for the pack test.
