Free workshop to assist families in preparation for the fire season

Summary

The NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) Orana Team is offering women the opportunity to attend a free, two day workshop from Friday 8th – Saturday 9th August 2014 to assist in preparing their homes and family for the coming fire season.

NSW RFS Orana Team Community Safety Officer Kennedy Tourle said "the project concept has stemmed from a successful program "Firey Women" run by the South Australia Country Fire Service. Last year the Orana Team received funding to trial a similar program to determine success locally with big results".

"The aim of the program Women with Flair is to target, educate and empower rural women by providing bush fire awareness, knowledge, skills and confidence. It is not necessarily giving women the ability to stay and defend their property but providing information so they can make an informed decision for the safety of themselves and their family" Kennedy Tourle said.

The Rotary Club of Dubbo South has taken notice of the pilot program and has come on board to sponsor the next workshop to be held in Wongarbon from 9am to 3pm each day.

"Having the Rotary Club of Dubbo South involved means we now have the funds to run another program prior to the fire season" explained Orana Team Manager Superintendent Lyndon Wieland. "It is about building resilience within our communities as it can be the women and children left at home during bush fires where they can be most vulnerable" said Supt Wieland.
