A grass fire at Combo, eight kilometres east of Geurie, has been controlled by fire crews who responded quickly to the blaze.

More than 20 appliances, two fixed-wing bombers, two bulk water carts and a grader had been deployed to battle the blaze, which at its peak was travelling at 1 kilometre per hour.

By 5pm the fire was classified as under control, after burning more than 115 hectares.

RFS Orana team leader Superintendent Lyndon Wieland has praised the efforts of firefighters, who faced flames up to five metres high.

“The crews were fantastic, they got on top of it really quickly,” Superintendent Wieland said.

“If they hadn’t have it surely would have spread.”

EARLIER: “We’ve got a fairly fast-running grass fire on the north side of the Mitchell Highway about eight kilometres out of Geurie at a location called Combo,” RFS Orana team leader Superintendent Lyndon Wieland said.

“We’ve got about 20 tankers on the fire ground, we’ve got two fixed-wing aircraft, graders and bulk water.”

The fire is not threatening properties at this stage, Superintendent Wieland said.

“There are some isolated rural properties but we will be able to protect those with tankers,” he said.
