New name and recognition for Carwoola Brigade members

NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) Lake George Zone members today gathered to celebrate a Brigade’s name change and honour volunteers for their long-standing dedication and commitment to protecting the community.

NSW RFS Assistant Commissioner Stuart Midgley congratulated members past and present of the new Carwoola Rural Fire Brigade, formerly known as the Stoney Creek Brigade.

“This Brigade has a proud history of community service,” Assistant Commissioner Midgley said.

“While many are still recovering from the Taliesin fire last year, it is evident that this fire and the many through the years before it have brought the brigade and community even closer together.

“Today, the Brigade responds to a wide range of emergency incidents ranging from bush and grass fires, motor vehicle accidents, as well as lending a helping hand at community events and assisting residents prepare for the fire season.”

Assistant Commissioner Midgley also presented Long Service Medals and Clasps and National Medals to eight members in recognition of their combined 142 years of service.

“Every member is worthy of the highest praise, however I would like to make particular mention of Geoffrey Wright, who has received the Long Service Medal 2nd Clasp in recognition of his 30 years of service,” Assistant Commissioner Midgley said.

“I’d also like to praise the dedication of the Brigade’s current Community Engagement Officer, Life Member Shirley Conn, who has been awarded with a National and Long Service Medal in recognition of her 20 years with the service.

“Congratulations also to Glenn Nicolson who has received the Carwoola Brigade’s Pauline Stewart Memorial Award, which recognises the greatest contribution to the brigade in a non-operational capacity.

“Following the Taliesin fire last year, Glenn has worked very closely with the community, especially in regards to organising tree fellers to assist property owners remove trees impacted by the fire.

“The hard work and professionalism of NSW RFS members does not go unnoticed and while they do not ask for praise, we gladly award these medals as a proud acknowledgement of their contribution and commitment.”

During the ceremony held at the Carwoola Rural Fire Brigade Station on Gathering Place, the Brigades local Chaplain carried out a Blessing of the Fleet on the Brigades three vehicles, which are actively used to protect the community.
