Bush Fire Risk Management Plans

A Bush Fire Risk Management Plan (BFRMP) is a comprehensive document that maps and describes the level of bush fire risk across an area. The BFRMP identifies assets within the community at risk from bush fire, assesses the level of risk to those assets and establishes treatment options to deal with the risk and who is responsible for carrying out those treatments. The BFRMP is used to determine such things as where mechanical clearing or hazard reduction burns are conducted, which areas require specialised fire protection, and which areas need to be targeted for community education.

The knowledge and opinions of local people about bush fires, important assets and potential risks is a focus of BFRMPs. Bush Fire Management Committees (BFMCs) will actively seek the opinions of local people through meetings and other communication channels when developing a draft BFRMP.

Once developed, the draft plan will be put on public exhibition, and the community will have the opportunity to provide further comment.

Once endorsed, a BFRMP is available to the public for viewing.

Identifying Assets

The key component of a BFRMP is the identification and assessment of assets at risk from bush fire and how these assets will be treated to minimise the identified risk. Information on identifing and assessing assets is available by clicking here.

Treating Assets

Once assets at risk from bush fire have been identified, the BFMC will develop treatment strategies to manage the bush fire risk and determine who will implement these strategies.

Further information on treating assets at risk is available by clicking here

The Process

The process that a BFMC works through to prepare a BFRMP is outlined in BFCC Policy 1/2008 can be downloaded by clicking here.

More detailed information is available in the Bush Fire Risk Management Planning Guidelines which can be downloaded by clicking here.

A copy of the Model Plan which is used as a template by BFMC to prepare their BFRMP can be downloaded by clicking here.

How Can I Get Involved in Bush Fire Risk Management Planning?

If you are interested in participating in the BFRMP process, contact your local Fire Control Centre and speak to one of our officers.
